As I became more confident in my throwing techniques, I realized I could further enhance my work with surface decorations. Mastering the sgraffito in terra sigillata technique opened up additional opportunities for immersing myself in that soothing mental trance, as well. I meticulously draw designs in freshly applied terra sigillata, and then carve away the negative space around them, using small strokes with fine carving tools. The textures left by the carving style illustrate my deep meditative concentration. My designs are inspired by nature: leaves and vines that twine around the piece, seeming to grow directly out of the mouth, or up from the foot of the vessel, as if the vessel contains some magic elixir so powerful that life will grow from solid stone.

The combination of form and surface decoration can produce sometimes dramatic results. Some pieces are very formal, others seem to belong to another planet. Recent evolutions in my style feature vessels assembled from multiple parts, especially egg-shaped forms that are cut open, manipulated, and attached in ways that attempt to defy gravity. As a whole, I think my work speaks to my desire to escape the trials and tribulations of living an ordinary life on this planet, and fly away to a magical realm elsewhere.
From a young age, I’ve had always had an interest in pottery, and other fine crafts, and always said, “Someday, I want to learn how to do that.” “Someday” arrived January 2002. From the very first moment I sat down at the wheel, I was enthralled. The hypnotic motion of the spinning wheel was mesmerizing. I found a tranquility and peace of mind in the process of throwing that was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. Since then, I’ve worked hard to master the skills necessary in throwing, and to develop a personal style that conveys that sense of tranquility. My vessel-based forms usually feature smooth, sensuous curves that invite the hand to caress it.
